Classic British Kitchen in Horsham, West Sussex

Following on from a rear extension at their property, this couple required a unique open-plan design with distinctive separations.

The Brief

This client approached us midway through construction work at their property seeking a classic kitchen design to suit their Horsham home. The layout needed to make the most of the extension, with new windows and a sunny skylight installed as part of the building work.

The clients favoured a design where functional areas were grouped together, with an overall theme that was cohesive and suited all areas of the large kitchen and dining space. An island, breakfast area, laundry and utility style area, and a small work surface area to store mobiles and phone chargers were important requests.

Design Elements

Working from architect’s plans, Alistair’s design sought to make the most of natural light in the new space by placing a long L-shape of furniture at the window and beneath the new skylight. The island is also placed to make the most of views out to the garden and natural light from above.

A timeless theme was what the clients favoured, and a subtle Limestone finish has been used throughout to compliment the crisp white walls and natural flooring. The kitchen itself is a shaker option from British manufacturer Mackintosh named Sovereign, and is a narrow framed shaker door style used in this case with detailed bar handleware.

Designed Alistair has grouped furniture as requested, creating functional areas for when the client is washing clothes or making breakfast.

Quartz work surfaces are a hard-wearing and durable addition to this kitchen. They have been chosen in a white lightly flecked option from manufactuer Silestone named Blanco Maple.

To add a splash of colour to the design the client opted for a bright blue glass splashback which is easy to clean and ties in nicely with exposed oak cabinetry on wall units and is illuminated by undercabinet lighting.

Special Inclusions

This kitchen is packed with unique elements chosen by the clients, and few choices were more important than the selection of Neff appliances. With one of the clients a keen baker and cook choosing models with useful functions was very important.

A Neff Slide&Hide oven and combination oven add great cooking functions to this kitchen to help this client cook up some delicious bakes. Additional Neff appliances like a refrigerator, freezer, extractor hood, and dishwasher are integrated behind cabinetry so to not interrupt the theme.

A popular appliances: a wine cabinet has been installed into the island, a 30cm CDA model which has capacity to chill up to twenty wine bottles at a time.

A number of clever storage solutions have been deployed to make access to cabinetry and foods easier, including pull-out larder drawers and pull-down shelves installed into wall units.

Project Highlight

The highlight of this project is the unique areas that have been created at the client’s request.

Alistair has designed each area to fit within little nooks of the room, equipping each space with plenty of storage for breakfast foods and small appliances, and even an additional sink for the laundry and utility area.

The clients were delighted with the end product given the vast construction work and internal installation work by our team.
